An art director’s duties consist of setting an artistic tone to a project, which can range from websites, magazines, newspapers, ad campaigns, to film, photoshoots, and video content creation. Art directors work alongside the creative and branding teams within the company, and their main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceptualizing company’s brand identity
  • Planning and executing marketing campaigns
  • Designing layouts for print ads
  • Supervising photoshoot productions
  • Overseeing all the different creative processes of a project

Specific tasks of art directors will vary depending on the industry as well as the company or agency they work in. In some cases, art directors may be responsible for coordinating work schedules and setting up meetings with employees. Other times, administrative work like setting project deadlines, planning and organizing budgets, and monitoring employees’ efficiency are duties that are often included as a part of the role.

Art directors usually work in an office environment as they help coordinate ideas for creative projects since its initial conception to its final execution. Most commonly, they tend to stay more focused on the concept while delegating the rest of the work to graphic designers, photographers, and other employees within the creative or production team. 

For this particular position, a degree in art or graphic design will be preferred, as well as a good portfolio of one’s personal projects. Many years of prior experience within the field of creative work will be another prerequisite for the role. Other ideal requirements for anyone seeking the job are conceptual thinking, creativity, good communication, and teamwork skills, but also the knowledge of art history, photography, graphic design, and typography.

Moreover, knowledge of and ability to use Adobe software and other graphic design programs will be equally useful since an art director is in charge of approving and combining the many elements of work in an aesthetically pleasing and creative manner. 

More importantly, to become a successful art director, one needs to have thick skin and be open to criticism as this is considered to be one of the most challenging and high-demanding positions within a company. The person has to be fond of a lifestyle that will require a constant flow of creativity.
